The Latrobe Valley has been designated as a Health Innovation Zone, the first of its kind in Australia. The State Government has committed to a $27.3 million investment over five years for the Latrobe City area through the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone.

The Latrobe Health Assembly is one of the key components in the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone. The Zone also includes the Latrobe Health Advocate who will strengthen the Latrobe Valley community’s voice on health and wellbeing.

The Assembly is a community-centred model to harness the strength, wisdom and collective talents of our community, putting Assembly members front and centre in identifying health and wellbeing priorities and innovating health services.

The Co-Design Facilitator will work in partnership with the community, the Assembly, local health and community service agencies, the Department of Health and Human Services and business and industry to drive health innovation.

The Assembly has a strong focus on community engagement to ensure the community plays a vital role in determining health and wellbeing priorities and service design.

Initial priorities for the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone include:

• Initiatives to encourage a culture of healthy living in Latrobe
• Opportunities to build pride in our community
• Transforming the community’s relationship to prevention activities
• Empowerment of the community so it can identify, drive and help deliver innovative health and wellbeing programs, activities and outcomes
• Community-led intervention and screening programs for early identification of health conditions
• Greater awareness of how to access community mental health services so people in need are able to reach out when they need help
• Better chronic disease management so people have the assistance they need to manage their health concerns,
• Improved access to specialist health services so that Latrobe Valley patients can access specialist services without long commutes.
